The museum is near the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, upon Colle Guasco.
It is housed in the former Episcopacy, an annex of San Ciriaco Cathedral, which was probably built as a monastery, for centuries the residence of the Bishops of Ancona, its cloister still preserving medieval columns and arches. The museum was established in order to house the considerable wealth of stone tablets recovered during reconstruction and restoration works to the Cathedral.
Here you can find sarcophagi, carved stone tablets and slabs; a valuable picture gallery with works from 1300 to 1800; the Treasure of the Cathedral with sacred silver pieces, cloths and furnishings, in addition to a collection of coins and medals from Roman and Medieval times. The Sarcophagus of Flavio Gorgonio (6th century) and the Flemish Tapesteries inspired by cartoons by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) are particularly interesting.
