The museum is near the centre of Castelfidardo (Mordini's Palace).
The museum is located in Palazzo Mordini, a building which dates back to the 15th century. Designed by the association Italia Nostra, it was inaugurated in 1989. The documentary material and the relics, were ordained in memory of the battle of the 18th September 1860, fought and won at Castelfidardo by the army under the command of general De Lamoriciere. The victory was one of the most important military events of the whole Risorgimento period, with such great political repercussions as the annexation of the Marches and Umbria regions to the rest of Italy.
The museums is composed of three sections: the archive and the municipal library with the exhibition halls; the outdoor monumental complex dedicated to Castelfidardo's Fallen, a National Monument; the battlefield, where the memorial-ossuary is also situated, the first "European" memorial housing the remains of soldiers from many European nations. The itinerary within the exhibition halls is guided by information panels and notice boards.
