According to legend this crucifix was carved by San Luca and Nicodemo. It disappeared and appeared again after being humiliated and tortured by a Jew, taken to Beirut where it was seen by Carlo Magno, and was brought to Italy by one of the French Kings who presented it to Pope Leo III. For unknown reasons, it was then brought to Numana and forgotten until one day it re-emerged once again from the sea following the destruction of an old church where it had been conserved and looked after by an old hermit monk.
In the Sanctuary, it's possible to see two different expressions on the face of Christ on the Cross, if observed from the right hand side of the alter, one sees a Christ full of life with the eyes wide open on the other hand, from the left hand side the eyes seem to be completely life-less.
