The Archaeological Museum is in the centre of Ancona, near Plebiscito square.
Since 1958 the museum has been located in Palazzo Ferretti, (constructed in the sixteenth century and restored in the eighteenth) The range of exhibits record life in the Marche from the Paleolithic Age to the High Middle Ages. Various exhibits from the Roman period can be found on the ground floor of the museum, such as the extensive medal section.
Worth viewing from the Paleolithic Age: bowl with linear design, bowl with cow's head, female figure (recovered in Tolentino). The section on the Bronze Age includes 25 superb daggers recovered from storeroom in Ripatransone. The section on the Bronze and Iron Ages is displayed in 23 exhibition rooms of the museum. It renders a through insight into the Picena and Gallica civilizations and includes numerous burial objects which are well worth viewing. Admirable amongst the important artifacts are the bronze vases and shields, silver and ivory goods from Etruria (ancient home to the Etruscans), decorated Attic vases, precious gold necklaces both Hellenistic and Celtic and noted head of youth, recovered from a sanctuary in Cagli and an excellent exemplar of Late-classical Etruscan bronze art. Local art includes some original creations such as bronze pendants, a human figurine, a double-sided head depicting Taurus and Aries.
